Aluminum vs steel pergola comparison for Dubai climate. Understand the differences in durability, maintenance, cost, and performance in UAE weather conditions.
We get this question every week. Clients see steel pergolas advertised at lower prices and wonder if they should save the money. Here is a straight comparison based on our experience building both in Dubai over the past decade.
| Factor | Aluminum | Steel |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion | Does not rust. Ever. | Rusts if coating is scratched or chipped |
| Weight | Lightweight. Easier on rooftops and decks | 3x heavier. Needs stronger foundations |
| Maintenance | Wash with water occasionally | Needs repainting every 3 to 5 years |
| Lifespan | 25+ years in Dubai conditions | 10 to 15 years before major repair |
| Initial Cost | Higher upfront | 20 to 30% cheaper initially |
| 10 Year Total Cost | Lower (no repainting) | Higher (repainting + rust repair) |
For residential pergolas in Dubai, aluminum wins on every metric except initial price. The 20 to 30 percent premium over steel pays for itself within 3 to 5 years when you factor in zero maintenance costs. We have seen steel pergolas in coastal areas like Palm Jumeirah and JBR start showing rust bubbles under the paint within 2 years, even with hot dip galvanizing. Aluminum in the same location looks exactly like the day it was installed after 5 years.
The only case where steel makes sense is for very large commercial structures where the spans are too wide for aluminum profiles. In those cases, we use steel for the main structure and aluminum for the louvers and visible elements.
Yes. Aluminum alloy 6063 T5 has more than enough structural strength for residential pergolas. Our standard 150x150mm columns handle spans up to 5 meters without issue. For wider spans, we increase to 200x200mm profiles.
Aluminum does expand slightly with temperature changes, but our designs account for this with expansion joints and flexible connections where needed. It is not a practical concern for pergola structures.
Surface rust can be ground off, treated, and repainted. But once rust penetrates into joints and hidden areas, the repair becomes expensive and the structure is compromised. Prevention is always better, which is why we recommend aluminum.
